Stances can be broken down into 3 categories
#1 – Used to demonstrate respect and self-control
#2 – Used as a “teaching tool” How to learn to use my body to create power
#3 – Used for “practical application” What I will use when attacked
I believe the idea behind those 5 basic stances is to help the student understand the mental attitude of respect and self control and the physical understanding of weight transfer, balance, stability, hip movement, flexibility, and distancing, when generating power. When you have to defend yourself or risk being injured, you do so with balance, speed, power, agility, and confidence.
